It’s a little more legwork to set this up than using a VVV script, but I like knowing all the moving pieces in play. If you changed the username and password, you may need to change those as well. You will need to change the DB_NAME to the name of the database created via Sequel Pro. Lucky for us, MAMP has a nice big ol’ button to launch Sequel Pro if you have it installed. Then we get to do the super fun task of setting up MySQL databases. Now that the ports are set, start adding hosts and folders. Instead of develop.wp:8888, you get develop.wp. MAMP Pro defaults to some p cray ports, so hop on over to the General settings tab and click the Set ports to 80, 443, and 3306 button.

There’s only a little setup needed to get custom TLDs and folders going and there’s one step I’d recommend changing before jumping in. It is worth noting that, within the installation package, in the case of Windows, there is the option to install MAMP Pro with a 14-day trial version, while for Mac users, this trial version is included automatically. Drag the MAMP folder ( not MAMP PRO - we'll save that walk-through for another time) to the Applications folder. It’s not really necessary, but it’s pretty dang nice. Once the MAMP download is complete, double-click the MAMP disk image (it should be something like MAMP2.0.3.dmg), and you should get a MAMP window pop up. This is handy when setting up local WordPress installs.

Or you can just download the latest at /download/. Until recently I was happy to just use the base version, but Im now using the Pro version and Ill mention a couple of advantages it. MAMP comes in two flavours MAMP and MAMP Pro.
If youre on Windows, I can recommend XAMPP (which is also available for Mac) which does essentially the same thing. You can do the same thing with individual releases as well via tags like this: $ svn co wp-stock MAMP is probably the most popular option for getting Apache, MySQL and PHP running on a Mac.

The biggest benefit for me is that now I can navigate to the folder in terminal and run svn up to update to the latest stuffs on trunk. All it does is clone the files in the /trunk/ into a new folder called wp-dev. Here’s the scary SVN command to clone WordPress trunk: $ svn co wp-dev Mostly, I find every GUI pretty horrible for SVN and Git so I figured it was worth a shot. I decided to try SVN via terminal this time. Here’s a bit on my process moving from VVV to other stuff.
